If you are planning to purchase 1–5 roots, then retail is likely to be the way to go, especially if you don’t care at all how rare or new something is so you plan to get the more common varieties. Check out our book (available on our home page) for recommended varieties and well-regarded retailers!

If you’re planning to purchase hundreds of roots and at least 25 of each variety, then I’d recommend registering as a business and purchasing wholesale.

However, if you’re somewhere between these two options, I’d encourage you to look at our group ordering as an alternative.

Each year I choose a few of our recommended varieties to offer up. I purchase the roots wholesale, sort them, and distribute for a fee. The wholesale prices are quite discounted, so it’s often the cheaper alternative. The summary of costs is below, and I’ve done a few price comparisons for you. Please note that the comparisons are just approximations.

• $6/root which covers both the international and the domestic shipping
• Availability is generally up in February; the shipment typically arrives in October
• If roots are sold out or otherwise not available, you get a refund

Buying wholesale with the group

• Fee to join group = $50
• Wholesale price = $25 each x 10 roots = $250
• Shipping ($6/root) = $60
• Total buying with the group = $360

Buying Retail

• Total buying retail = $60 each x 10 roots = $600
• Shipping = $23
• Total buying retail = $623

Likely more economical to buy with the group when buying 6 or more common varieties or 3 or more of the less-common varieties.

Buying Retail
